These beautiful and decorative soapsone bookends are hand carved in by Nyongoko, one of our very skilled Afgifts artists in Kenya.
The craftsman first mine the soapstone from the hills around the village of Tabaka, in Kisii, Kenya and then, using knives or handmade tools, they individually carve each piece. After carving, the figure is wet-sanded and then polished, all by hand. They there after dye the stone and then incise it with the patterns desired.
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock consisting mostly of the mineral talc. Sometimes known as steatite, it's very soft and frequently used for sculpting
