The stones are individually hand carved so each is one of a kind. The craftsman first mine the soapstone from the hills around the village of Tabaka, in Kisii, Kenya and then, using knives or handmade tools, they individually carve each piece. After carving, the figure is wet-sanded and then polished, all by hand. They there after dye the stone and then incise it with the patterns desired.
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock consisting mostly of the mineral talc. Sometimes known as steatite, it's very soft and frequently used for sculpting
